The Shangri-La Diet

A few weeks ago I received an email from a senior editor at Penguin books, asking me if I’d mind if she sent me a book on a new diet called “The Shangri-La Diet” for my review. She’d found this site and my webring, and thought I might be interested, and of course, my answer was “YES!”

I just got the book in the mail a couple days ago, and have started to dig in. I’m not that far into it yet, but I’m really interested in it so far.

The author is Dr. Seth Roberts, a psychology professor at University of California at Berkley. His idea was to basically use his own body as a laboratory, thinking that self-experimentation would be his best research. He started with altering his moods and trying to correct an issue with insomnia, then moved on to a philosophy regarding how our body responds to foods we eat based on their taste or familiarity (eating it before). He did a little experimenting and wound up losing 40 pounds eating pretty much whenever and whatever he wanted, but wound up not being “hungry” as often. (I’m still reading into how he managed THAT one!)

Anyway, I’ll be sure to post a full review once I’ve finished the book.

Thanks Marian, for choosing me!!

  2. LOL, have you ever read “Lost Horizon” by James Hilton? It’s about Shangri-La…Hilton invented it in that book as a kind of fictional utopia in the Himalayas.

Man I wish people would send me free books.

  3. I haven’t read it, but I knew that’s where “Shangri-La” came from… (had to do some searching once I got the book, needed to find some sort of correlation between “Shangri-La” and dieting!! LOL)

I’ll let you guys all know how it is… :)

  4. […] read more of The Shangri-La Diet book […]

  5. I’ve lost seventy pounds on this diet, though the name came from the users group before I started in November, they had a vote on what the diet should be called.

It is pretty amazing, all in all, though the really amazing part is that it works. I’m still having a problem believing in it.
