Getting back to food journaling is SUCH a good thing.
It was a crazy end of the week last week, but I started journaling my food again and was absolutely floored on the first day: over 3,000 calories!
In all fairness, it wasn’t a “typical” day for me, but still.
Since then, I had two days where I was around 1700 calories, but it wasn’t all “good” food.
And then yesterday… I was so proud of myself! I had made a “turkey ratatouille” sort of dish, made enough to freeze two containers and have two in the fridge, almost all veggies. The day’s total in calories? 1,329.
Pretty neat, huh? It’s amazing what happens when you really track your intake. SparkPeople makes it super easy, of course, since they tally everything up for you, show you charts and a week’s history at a clip. It’s really nice. I feel good having that overview at the end of the day!
Do you keep a food journal?

I used to and it really helped! It’s also a pain in the ass, like most things that work well.
I seem to be doing ok maintaining without writing stuff down, but if someday the pants start getting tight again I have a promise to myself that I’ll go back to it. Good luck–sounds like it’s working really well already!
Wow, been there and done that. I kept eating properly after I stopped the journal but my exercise level went way down for some reason and now it looks like I will have to start a journal all over again too. Sigh…
All the best and good luck,
Chris
Most people underestimate their caloric intake by 30-40%! That’s huge. The only true way to keep it in check is to track everything! I mean every measly little thing that goes in to your body! :)
Lara, it wasn’t until I started journaling that I was able to get a grip on reality! I will still go back to it now and then (I use FitDay) to keep myself in check. I find it invaluable as it’s as important to ensure you’re not under-eating as it is to ensure you’re not over-eating.
