Who drinks five cans of soda per day? This is ridiculous advice.
Mo - are you serious? I’m a diet coke drinker since birth, and I can easily go through a 2-liter bottle in a couple hours if it’s a hot enough day.
LOTS of people drink more than 5 cans per day. Just because YOU don’t, doesn’t make the advice that Jenn left “ridiculous”.
Go visit a few weight loss forums or chat boards - you’ll find that plenty of overweight people GOT that way from drinking gallons of sugary soda per day. I actually have a friend who’s about 400 lbs. and downs a 2 liter of Mountain Dew before he even gets dressed in the morning to go to work.
Don’t be so quick to judge “mo pie”… there are people out there that smoke 4 packs of cigarettes a day. Do you realize that’s 80 cigarettes? Given that most people are awake for only 16 hours per day, that’s 12 cigarettes per hour. One every 5 minutes. It takes about 3 or 4 minutes to even smoke one, so essentially they’re chain smokers. I happen to be a 2-pack a day smoker. I personally can’t fathom being a 4-pack’er, but it doesn’t mean that those people don’t exist in large numbers.
I used to drink about 3 liters of regular Dr. Pepper a day. When I switched to diet pop, I started losing about 3 pounds a month even with minimal exercise.
wow looks like my soda blog caused a debate, thanks for reading everyone til text time

Oh no! Lara, I didn’t know you are a smoker! So, basically you’re saying you smoke 1 cigarette every 10 minutes on average?!?! Nothing personal, but I don’t understand how anyone can claim they are trying to get healthy (by diet and exercise) while they continue to smoke. Have you thought of cutting down to 1 pack per day instead of 2? I’ll bet your cardio workouts (if any) would get MUCH easier.
Also, diet soda isn’t really healthy for you either…although a huge caloric improvement over regular soda. I have maybe one diet soda per week when I’m really craving it, but mostly stick to water and iced tea. I think I used to drink soda so much because I was always so thirsty and dehydrated…not realizing that the soda actually makes you MORE thirsty and dehydrated. Since I cut way down a couple years ago I don’t really miss it.
grrr. i drink about two 20 oz bottles of pepsi a day. sometimes more. sometimes less. but basically it averages out to about two. and i have one diet caffiene free coke a day. i know sounds silly. but anyway. when i didn’t drink any soda at all. i weighed a whopping 80lbs less. i love soda. i wish i didn’t. i know how unhealthy it is. even the diet.
I have always been a soda addict but in college my love of coca cola spiraled totally out of control. I would drink a 3 liter every day, plus who knows how many cans walking from building to building. But when I gave soda up for lent I dropped 10 lbs…of sourse lent ended, I started drinking soda again and gained the 10 lbs, but stopping soda consumption definetely makes a difference.
Hey lara, isnt 2 packs of smokes a day something like 12 dollars a day??? Stop smoking and you could spend the money on better things, like beer.
LOL Izzy…
Actually, the 2 pack thing isn’t a regular thing. It depends on a number of factors - my stress level is a big one. How much time I spend online working or doing whatever is another.
I had a date a couple weeks ago, with a non-smoker, and I didn’t have one for 2 and a half hours, and it didn’t bother me - because I was happy and enjoying myself and in a great mood. :)
If I had to average it out over the course of a year or whatever, it’s likely a lot closer to just a pack a day.
And yes, Kirsten - I SHOULD be stopping smoking while trying to lose weight and get healthy overall - but as you might know, when one quits smoking, they tend to gain weight. (I know from personal experience, that this is very true for me. Even if I substituted smokes with carrot sticks, I’d still gain…)
So for me, it’s one life changing habit at a time. I want to get my weight and healthy eating/fitness under control first. I’ll quit smoking either when all the weight’s gone, or when I get pregnant - whichever comes first. :)
Besides, Iz… you know that I can go a lot longer than 10 minutes without one. It just depends on what I’m doing, where I am, and who I’m with. :) And yeah, what my stress level is. LOL
I weigh 228 lbs, I am 5′10”. I am pretty muscular but have a belly. I have been drinking pop daily for years. Every time I cut out pop I start losing weight, however I never quit for long. I am committing myself to quit the pop. I probably do drink 4 or 5 a day….Also I have began weight lifting again. W
Thanks for sharing, Tim - I think it’s the same thing as a “beer belly” for some, mainly men. It’s the carbonation and sugars that work against you in your abdominal region!
Good for you for committing to stop drinking it!
Hey guys! Here a few tips for you when you want to stop drinking soda:
1. Replace your soda with water or tea SLOWLY! If you stop drinking soda just like that, you’ll go through painful withdrawl symptoms like headaches.
2. Drink LOTS and LOTS of water to detox
And lastly,
3. Eat at least 3 servings of low fat yogurt. Studies show that people who eat at least 3 servings of yogurt a day lose weight faster than those who don’t.
Take it from me… I stopped drinking soda about 3 weeks ago and started eating yogurt for breakfast, as a snack, and with lunch. And voila! I am down almost 2 dress sizes and at the time, I wasn’t doing any kind of exercise (I am now of course).
i drink 6 cans of coke a day. i am going to try to cut back because i weigh 234 pounds
Don’t be so harsh on the writer. It’s like SHE IS ONLY THE MESSENGER!
I know for a fact that she is correct.
