10 Reasons To Get Started Losing Weight Today

Okay, so these are my reasons. But they can apply to just about anyone else, and they’re the things I’ve been thinking about after my up/down weeks on the scale recently.

10. The obvious: Health reasons. No one, at any age, should be overweight - we all know about the medical problems it causes. Being that I’ve already had a scare with cervical cancer, that I’m currently a smoker, and that I’ve been overweight since the age of 8 - I think that 21 years of fatness is just out of order. To think of all the damage that’s been done to my body over the last 21 years is sickening. This is the only body I’ve got - I need to take care of it.

9. It’s August, and I have yet to take advantage of the summer weather. I bought a bathing suit for $70 (they get expensive for fat people, you know) to take on my family reunion, and never wore it. I haven’t gone walking “because it’s too hot” but I haven’t done anything else outside either. Come winter, I’ll be complaining that I can’t go out “because it’s too cold”. Dammit. I’ve got about 2 good months of “outside” weather left until after April. I need to make use of it.

8. It’ll get me away from the computer (work). There’s no arguing that people need to keep a balance between work and the rest of their lives. What better excuse to get off my duff than to exercise so I can lose weight? Another no brainer…

7. My 30th birthday is in less than 8 months. That’s a long enough time to lose enough weight to get me very close to 200 lbs. (Total loss of 56 lbs from today) That’s 7 pounds a month. I can do that. And I need to. Wouldn’t it be fantastic to celebrate 30 years of life being under 200 (I’m talking 199 here…) for the first time in oh… 15 years? Oh gosh… 15 years of being over 200 lbs. Half my life. Wouldn’t getting back under 200 be such an AMAZING birthday gift to myself?! Why, yes it would.

6. I want to meet someone, fall in love, get married, and have children. What else do I have to say? (Please, no comments about how a man should love me for me. I know that. But as I’ve discussed in the past, we all know that men are visual creatures, and they won’t even begin to think of you romantically if they’re not first physically attracted to you. Period.)

5. Again, I want to have children. Sure, fat women can get pregnant. But it’s been proven that fat women tend to have more issues with pregnancy, if they even get pregnant easily in the first place. And I want my children to be healthy from conception. Being born to a fat mom is just laying the line for them to grow up as fat children and fatter adults.

4. My body hurts. I want it to stop. I have back pain, knee pain, ankle pain, quite often I find a numbness in my thighs from sitting on so much weight. My bones are carrying far too much weight, and if I don’t lose it, I’ll be more susceptible to osteoporosis and arthritis. No thanks.

3. Energy. Lots of energy. I’m trying to build my business. It takes a lot out of me, mentally… Which takes a toll on my energy levels. Not to say that being thin will prevent that from ever happening… but my body will be able to handle the stress much better than it does now. And hey, if I’m ever gonna have kids - I’ll NEED that energy!

2. More fun, for longer periods of time. One thing I love to do is dance. Going out to a concert, going line dancing, that sort of thing. However getting winded puts the kabash on how long I can actually do it. I’m sick and tired of having to sit down and “take a breather” when one of my favorite songs is playing.

1. Just look better, wear nicer clothes, and… possibly fulfill my dream of doing some plus modeling work for some major clothing companies, of course! As we all know, the models in the stores and catalogs for plus size clothes are NOT a size 22. They’re typically a 12. That’s what the fashion industry states begins the “plus” category. (Sick, I know.) I’d be thrilled to be in a twelve. Not only would I look and feel better, be healthier, but I’d be much more desirable by the plus size fashion industry.

So there you have it. Those are my reasons for getting my act together TODAY. What are your reasons?

  1. Hmmm…I just came back from the doctor’s office where I was given more pills for an infection and where I got to further discuss my medical issues. Yay. :( Plus, I’m home sick.

Plus, I just learned about how unregulated pet food is so I’ve been reading about home cooking for your pets, which of course talks about how when you feed your pets a nutriously balanced diets, they tend to stay healthy and do not get ill. This of course got me thinking…if I did the same for myself, I should then do better as far as my own health, yes?

So…I’m thinking that the cats, the dog, and myself are about to really get serious about what we eat, even if none of us what to. Since I’m the only one who can cook and read labels, I guess it’s up to me.

So, since I don’t want people children, I’ll substitute, I want long lives with my furry children into the list…

  2. I want to lose weight, so I can get ready faster in the morning. Yeah, I tried on 3 pairs of pants with different shirts this morning to find an outfit that I could live with and it really didn’t suck.

I still tugged at it way too much in my meetings this morning/afternoon.

  3. Oh… *count on my fingers* - my 30th birthday is in less than 7 month. And I have some really beautiful clothes in mind I like to wear on that day. That should be enough to keep me motivated tomorrow.

  4. I’m proud of you, Lara! You can do it!

I love all of your reasons. The only two that I can think of to add are:

    1. To never worry about whether I will fit into a seat again (When I was 240 this was a common occurence, but even at 190 my bottom half is still on the large side, wearing 18’s). There is nothing worse than having a chair arm dig into your leg while you are trying to watch a game/concert or travel on an airplane. Even worse than that, is the embarrassment of having your leg be flowing over into the next seat and touching a stranger’s, and not having any control over it.

    2. I am one of the unfortunate big but light on top gals. I’m a 42B, and it’s hard for me to find bras that fit! Bra manufacturers seem to assume that all big girls are well-endowed, and unfortunately I don’t fit into that category. So I would love to be able to walk into Victoria’s Secret and buy any bra that I want.

Great question and keep up the good work. We can do this together. I have been gaining and losing the same 5-10 pounds since March, and I really want to see the scale start going down again!!

  5. Such fantastic comments!

N Mallory - For right now, I can totally get into the furry children thing, and I’m with you, girl! Still sending prayers your way.

Anneke - MOST DEFINITELY do I understand your situation! I remember when I was working in an office and had the same issues.

Apfelmuse - so is it a challenge? Are we on? ;)

Rachel - I’d like to add those too. My boobs are the first thing to shrink when I’m losing weight, and often get stuck in that same scenario. I’ve been doing the same thing with the same 5-10 lbs, and I’m SICK and TIRED of being SICK and TIRED of them!

    Girls - let’s do this! :)

  6. Laura,

I wish you the best in your quest. You sound like you’re wanting to do this for yourself - which I think is great. I’ll keep checking in to see how you’re doing and encouraging you! Go girl!

  7. Lara you echoed my thoughts as to the reasons I decided to loose weight then eventually had wls.

    I am behind you 110%

    You will succeed!

  8. Hooray for all of us!

I have tracked all day (back to POINTS) and I did the FIRM Supercharged Sculpting! One day down!! :)

    How’s everyone else doing?
