I know I shouldn’t be shocked. I KNOW. But are you freaking kidding me?
This kid skyrockets to superstardom for being “the greatest competitor in Olympic history” and he actually is STUPID enough to not only smoke marijuana, but get caught on camera doing it?
Folks, this wasn’t some teeny little joint or something – he was smoking from a BONG.
I knew he looked like a big, stupid oaf. I’m sorry, don’t give me that “he’s a kid, he made a mistake” line of complete CRAP – we’re taught from the time we enter grade school that drugs are bad for you. He’s not some street-wise gang kid with loads of negative experiences and frustration that he would get caught up in “bad influence”. He’s 23 damn years old, supposedly educated, living in your average “good” environment and knew EXACTLY what he was doing.
What’s the matter, Mike? Endorsements not flooding at your feet anymore? Had to get some kind of publicity going? This is absurd.
I sure hope that the endorsements come to a complete and brutal stop for sure.
Oh, and here’s “Michael Phelps’ apology“:
“I engaged in behavior which was regrettable and demonstrated bad judgment. I’m 23 years old and despite the successes I’ve had in the pool, I acted in a youthful and inappropriate way, not in a manner people have come to expect from me. For this, I am sorry. I promise my fans and the public it will not happen again.”
You can view the incriminating evidence (photos) here.
I just have so many problems with this. I know, he’s “human” and whatever. But when you get yourself out there in the public eye, you have a responsibility to your fans, to children who want to BE JUST LIKE YOU SOMEDAY. As far as I’m concerned, he’s now just as useless as Lindsay Lohan and Amy Winehouse and all the other screwed up “idols” out there. I’m not naiive – believe me – and I know that smoking pot is never the first and only step. He’s ruined his life and he deserves it for being so freaking stupid.
UPDATE: I forgot to mention, In 2004 he got 18 months probation for DWI, too. WHAT A WINNER!!!

Okay, so all comments have been deleted, and I’m closing them off at this point.
I’ll be creating a comment policy now, thanks to a few unfortunate souls who felt the need to use profanity and insults to try to attack me for my opinions, on *gasp* MY blog.
For the rest of you, who haven’t been here but want to say something, let me first give you this:
1. I know that not all marijuana smokers are “street wise gang kids”. It was a rip on the way the media and film portrays casual drug users.
2. I have many friends who have smoked pot, or still do. The bottom line with those friends is that as long as they’re not hurting anyone (ie. staying home or what have you) and it’s not affecting their lives or their children, I couldn’t care less what they do. The only reason I would care is if it was going to have a permanent affect on a life. Period.
3. I’m not some bible-thumping, ignorant chick. I’ve been a lot of places and seen (and done) a lot of things. I’ve watched friends go from smoking marijuana to trying harder drugs, and then falling into seizures and mini-comas because of it. If those experiences make me “naive”, I’m sorry, but you need to recheck the definition of the word.
4. In regards to the profanity – I’m sorry, but even in “real life” a person can choose to walk away from someone who is using profane language and insults to try to win an argument, and therefore my asserting my rights to not accept that here on my blog are perfectly acceptable. I fight negativity every day of my life, and this place is the one place I can actually have 100% control over it – it doesn’t belong here, and it won’t be tolerated… End. Of. Story.
5. Last, but not least: I’m going to reiterate my whole point, one more time: I don’t care so much that he was smoking pot as an individual… What I care about is that whether he likes it or not, he’s looked up to. He’s a “celebrity” and he asked for that by taking his first swimming lesson and going on to the Olympics. Kids have joined swim teams BECAUSE of him. Kids have dreams that they too can go to the Olympics, win gold medals, and become world-renowned like him, BECAUSE of him. Now they all think it’s okay to break the law and smoke some pot, or do God knows what else, and get away with it, if they reach superstar status like he did. Great.
So all that said – I’m sorry that I had to close off comments here to those of you who actually can carry on a discussion with respect and courtesy. Unfortunately, there’s that whole bad apple analogy to contend with. Feel free to stick around and comment elsewhere though, if you can do so without resorting to idiot language. :)
Oh, and have a wonderful day!
