Dreaming of Diamonds?

Okay, so I seriously don’t know of a woman out there who hasn’t got her idea of what falls under “perfect engagement rings with diamonds” designed in her mind, despite whether or not she’s already wearing one. Sure, some of us want to be surprised. We don’t want to go to the store and pick it out, we don’t want to have to tell our man what we want in a ring.

But ladies, guys just can’t be that much of a mindreader. You’ve heard it before - the age-old conversation:

Woman looks upset, is frowning, or otherwise signals to man that she’s unhappy.

him: Honey, is something bothering you?
her: Nope.
him: Are you sure? You look upset about something.
her: I’m sure.
him: Is it something I did wrong?
her: WELL IF YOU DON’T KNOWWWW…

And so it goes. Woman expects man to be mindreader. Man gets frustrated and reconsiders his thought to propose in the first place. LOL

Okay, so I know that sounded extremely stereotypical, and that it’s a “man’s joke”. But seriously, I’ve seen women do this to their men and it’s just sad.

Personally? I have my “dream ring”, sure. And I’d hope my man (should that day ever come) would want to know what that is, but would put his own creative spin on it. I’m particularly fond of more than one “cut” of diamond, specifically either the marquis cut or the cushion cut. The rest of the ring? I’m open to being surprised. ;)

What about you? What’s your favorite cut? Did you tell your man, or would you?

  1. An article on engagement rings….what are you trying to tell us here??? Something huge going on in your life?

  2. LOL Izzy… no no no.

In fact, I had to clarify ahead of time that I was writing this but that it wasn’t a hint or anything like that. LOL

At least, not yet. ;) :P

  3. i bought myself a ring for my graduation from culinary school. and i pointed out to him why i like what on the ring. so i just gave him some ideas. and i really emphasized the parts i definately wanted. marquis cut and platinum. :-)

  4. I had an idea of what I wanted, but my husband (boyfriend at the time) never asked and we had not been dating very long, so I never hinted at what I liked.

He purchased a 1-carat round solitaire in a plain gold band. Well, I don’t wear gold…Never have. I am still not sure why he picked gold. And, in my mind, I had always preferred the clear mirror-finish of an emerald cut to the faceted-finish of a round cut. But you know what? It didn’t make me any less thrilled to get it. He picked it out on his own and researched all about the 4 C’s (cut, color, clarity and carat weight) so he was able to make an informed choice.

Nine years later, we had the stone reset in a white gold setting encrusted with smaller diamonds. I couldn’t be happier with my ring every time I look at it.
